The Diversity Employment Strategy 2003-2007
The Diversity Employment Strategy (DES) is the umbrella framework for employment and professional development initiatives provided for UTS employees from equity target groups, in particular:
- Indigenous Australians
- People with disabilities
- Women in non-traditional fields of employment
- Recent migrants
The principles underlying the Diversity Employment Strategy are those of inclusion, social justice, the social model of disability, collaboration, opportunity, affirmative action, awareness and support.
The DES provides an integrated and effective means by which people from equity target groups can be recruited, supported and retained in paid employment at UTS. The aim is to achieve NSW State Government benchmarks set by the Office of the Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment (ODEOPE), and also to promote employment opportunities in work areas which have historically had low recruitment figures for people from equity target groups.
While UTS maintains a variety of employment initiatives that are designed for and dedicated to specific equity target groups, the DES works by examining and streamlining the policies and proceedures of these separate initiatives. This coordinated and university-wide approach to diversity employment, ensures the maximum benefits for members of the equity target groups as employees, and for UTS as the employer.
Specific Aims of the Diversity Employment Strategy
The DES aims to increase:
- the percentage of Indigenous people employed at UTS with a view to their representation exceeding the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) benchmark of 2%
- the percentage of people with disabilities employed at UTS with a view to their representation achieving the EEO benchmark of 7%.
- the representation of women in non-traditional fields of employment at UTS
- the representation in senior positions of staff with a language background other than English
- opportunities for recent migrants and refugees in employment at UTS
