English Language Skills in the Workplace
Skillmax is a free NSW State Government program that helps staff from non-English speaking backgrounds to maximise their overseas qualifications, training, skills or experience. The Equity & Diversity Unit coordinates the program for UTS staff.
Upon completion of a course, participants receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment or Record of Achievement.
The Skillmax Program focuses on spoken and written communication, and is delivered in two modes: Classroom settings and Distance Learning.
The Spoken Communication Courses: Classroom setting
This course is 40 hours in duration. Participants attend (in work time) 4 hours, 1 day per week for 10 weeks. Topics include:
- Effective Oral Communication
- Dealing with Customers and Clients
- A Course in Conversation Networking Strategies in the Workplace
- Dealing with Conflict
- Pronunciation Skills Development
- Presenting Information
The Written Communication Skills Courses: Distance Mode
The following courses are offered through the distance learning mode. The duration varies according to students' needs but is normally 10 weeks. Students will need to commit up to 6 hours a week for each course:
- A Course in Grammar in Context for Intermediate to Post-Intermediate to Advanced Learners
- Writing Skills for Work
- Report Writing (15 week program)
