Deafness Awareness Training for Staff and Students

The UTS Equity & Diversity Unit coordinates Deafness awareness training at no cost for UTS staff and students.

Deaf awareness training will help you to develop a range of communication skills and strategies and gain insight into life from a Deaf person's perspective.

This series of fun, informal classes will introduce you to Auslan, the language of the Deaf community of Australia.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is a natural, visual language created by Deaf people. The signs are based on combinations of hand shapes, position, movement, use of space, facial expression and body language.

You will learn the fingerspelling alphabet, some practical Auslan skills and appreciate the role of visual communication in Auslan.

The course is offered each semester and consists of three two-hour sessions.
