2007 Awards
The UTS Human Rights Awards celebrate UTS students and staff whose spirit and commitment to social justice is creating better communities locally and internationally. Such endeavours are particularly important in the current global environment.
Awards Ceremony
The UTS Human Rights Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday 18 October, 2007.
We were delighted to welcome The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG as our 2007 guest speaker.
Congratulations to the following people who were award recipients.
Award Categories
1. Vice-Chancellor's Social Justice / Human Rights Award for staff.
An annual award to a member of general or academic staff or group to recognise an outstanding contribution to the advancement of social justice / human rights at the local, national or international levels.

David Taylor
For his commitment to social justice and human rights for the last thirty-five years both in Australia and internationally
2. The Elizabeth Hastings Memorial Award for Student Community Contribution.
To recognise a significant contribution to the community in the areas of equity, diversity, social justice or human rights

Steve Cochrane and Larry Towney
For their contribution to the writing and production of Hey Dad! For Indigenous Dads, Uncles and Pops - a parenting program for men
Holly Creenaune
For her tireless commitment to a range of social justice and human rights organisations and activities including Indigenous rights, climate change and environmental justice
3. UTS Equity & Diversity Award
To recognise a program or team that has made a sustained commitment to equity and diversity in relation to either staff or students at UTS

Information Management Team
For The Professional Information Project (PIP) which, in collaboration with UTS Shopfront, has delivered information management and information technology support to over 400 community organisations
The Indigenous pre-IT program
For its encouragement and support for Indigenous people to pursue careers and study in Information Technology since 2004
4.UTS Reconciliation Award
To recognise a contribution or project which advances Reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians either at UTS or in the wider community.

Joyce Donovan
For the development of, and her work with, the Narinya healing circle - a grief and trauma program specifically designed for Aboriginal women which can also be used for the wider community
5. The Jo Wilton Memorial Award for Women.
To recognise an individual woman or group of women who are working towards improving outcomes for women locally, nationally and/or internationally.

Anne Ross-Smith
For her work over the last ten years in providing both scholarly and practical assistance to organisations to develop cultures that support women who aspire to senior management and leadership careers
6. The UTS Creative Media Social Justice Award (Staff)
To recognise an audio/visual and/or multi-media project in which social justice and human rights themes are explored

Andrew Jakubowicz
For his work over the last fifteen years on Making Multicultural Australia which has produced a CD Rom and an extensive website for use in schools as a tool to combat racism

Anjana Chalise Regmi
For her voluntary work for the film Born Again - a Nepalese documentary advocating the elimination of the social ostracism of single women (widows) in order to incorporate them into the social mainstream
